So, being so so so close to finally finishing school, means that I can finally get back to work. Not to imply that I wasn’t working before this, but it is my genuine belief that for all of the value that a university provides in terms of creativity and atmosphere, the university is actually stifling to creatives. Part of this is simply because when the semester ends, the project ends and you have to start again, and unless you somehow work that out, or cater your education to your project, you can not really get around that.
So because I will now have the chance to work I decided that I should start sharing what I am going to work on. So here are my latest thoughts and project ideas. Not all of these are finished ideas, I welcome anyone to steal these from me as well (just let me know please), and I always welcome any and all outside assistance. As I mentioned earlier, theres a lot that I can do, but not a lot that I can do alone, so please please help
Project Idea # 1
Many people have heard me talking about this for a while, so for many this is not that new of a project, I have spent all semester thinking about this, and working out the nuances, unfortunately, being as lame as I actually am, I have spent a lot of time theorizing on it and haven’t gotten my hands dirty… but that’s going to change now
I am attempting to physically transplant the act of googling into the NYC environment. I believe that people are an untapped information source, as is the actual physical environment we occupy. The act of searching, is an act of communicating. This is both a scavenger hunt through the city as well as a collective commons of information that we have not toyed around with. In short – I become the search engine and people are the websites, I plan to walk around the city, searching for information and archiving it into a presentable “results page” that I will then offer people the chance to see.
I would love some assistance – Documenting, Brainstorming, Searching, Archiving, Feeding, Sustaining. And financially if someone wants to offer.
Project Idea # 2
My Free Public Internship
Belief # 1 – I think its a crime that students graduate from universities with thousands of dollars of debt and are then still underqualified to actually work because they do not have the experience and are forced to work free unpaid internships.
Belief # 2 – Design has not permeated other institutions enough. We need to bleed into other fields even more. For this I want to redefine freelancing.
And thus, I plan to sit out in a very public place and have a sign that says free professional design problem solving – competencies in …
I want to just sit outside and solve peoples problems. I will have a datalog that shows what problems I have already addressed, I will have materials for ideation and brainstorming handy, and I will offer other “experts” to sit down and offer their problem solving skills free as well.
This is my Internship, and my employers are the people of New York.
I plan to take donations – for operational costs (food, documentation, materials, time)
Project Idea # 3
You Really Do Have A Gorgeous Smile
Again, not that this is by any means a new project, as many people know, I’ve been working on this one for almost 2 years now, but if anybody follows my blog, they know that updates happen very sporadically. Not to say that this project is not still always on my mind. It is, but again, universities are not good environments for doing work, they are good environments for learning about work, your own capabilities, and what you may or may not want to do.
In short, as soon as school ends, I plan to create a very large amount of cards, and actively give the cards out, I plan to just spend one whole day, walking all around the city, finding people to give the cards to. In response to a critique I received on this project some time ago, in which I was told that I am equating happiness with a woman’s good looks, I realized that I misrepresented my own feelings on this project. I am not making other people happy by giving out these cards, that is not the goal, if it happens, then I am all for it, but I believe that the act of giving is the happiness. This is a totally selfish project, I stroke my own ego, by giving people compliments. And that’s one of the major reasons why the cards say that you need to pass them on, because I hope that people understand the extreme happiness in giving, and particularly in giving something that you created.
If anyone is at all interested in walking around the city and giving people compliments in the form of little brown cards with doodle like illustrations on them, then please please let me know. I think I have my email on this website somewhere. But its Roznoshchik (@) Gmail.com —> I think that prevents the spam bots!!
Project Idea # 4
I can’t say too much on this one, as this is a collaborative design project and not one of my own personal public performance works, but in short, despite all the criticisms that universities get recently, and all of higher education in general, I still love it, and I wholeheartedly believe that there is genuine value in the system. And so, I believe that the universities need to rethink the ways in which learning happens, and the actual educational structure they provide. This is a project that begins to think about a new kind of learning that is sponsored by universities but open for all. It is my idea of how universities can evolve. I look forward to thinking about this and education in general. Will share more as project develops
